Verdetto: GPU RTX 5080 SFF con una proposta di valore discutibile

Asus ha fatto una mossa interessante quest'anno, ampliando la sua serie Prime, tradizionalmente focalizzata sulla fascia media, per includere l'ammiraglia RTX 5080. La Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC Edition cerca di essere una valida alternativa alla RTX 5080 Founders Edition di Nvidia.

La Prime RTX 5080 OC sfoggia un design minimalista ma funzionale, che occupa solo 2,5 slot e che la rende ideale per le costruzioni a fattore di forma ridotto (SFF).

In termini di prestazioni grezze, Prime RTX 5080 OC Edition offre un modesto miglioramento del 2-3% rispetto alla RTX 5080 FE, sia nei benchmark sintetici che negli scenari di gioco reali.

L'aumento rispetto alla Radeon RX 7900 XTX è più tangibile, nell'ordine del 10-13% a seconda del benchmark o del gioco.

Prime RTX 5090 OC beneficia anche del famoso stack software di Nvidia e la scheda supporta pienamente le ultime funzionalità di generazione multi-frame DLSS 4 dell'architettura Blackwell.

Asus incorpora una soluzione di raffreddamento efficace per la Prime RTX 5080 OC, che mantiene le emissioni di calore e di rumore della scheda ragionevoli, considerando le prestazioni offerte.

Sebbene non si possa sbagliare con la Prime RTX 5080 OC, ci sono alcuni avvertimenti di cui essere consapevoli. I consumi energetici di questa scheda durante il gioco possono essere leggermente superiori rispetto alla RTX 5080 FE, senza alcun guadagno percepibile in termini di fotogrammi.

La VRAM GDDR7 da 16 GB, sebbene molto più veloce dell'implementazione GDDR6X dello scorso anno, può diventare rapidamente un collo di bottiglia in alcuni titoli impegnativi, anche se questo vale per tutte le RTX 5080 in generale.

Un rapido tour di Asus Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC Edition

Con dimensioni di 304 x 126 x 50 mm, Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC è leggermente più spessa della RTX 5080 FE. Tuttavia, rimane una scheda SFF, che occupa solo 2,5 slot.

Il rivestimento anteriore è realizzato in plastica di alta qualità, anche se avremmo preferito che fosse più robusto, ed è completato da una piastra posteriore in metallo.

I loghi "GeForce RTX" e "PRIME" sono ben visibili sul coperchio anteriore, ma non c'è alcun tipo di RGB intorno a questi.

Prime RTX 5080 OC offre la tipica serie di connettori per display come la stragrande maggioranza delle GPU in circolazione. I tre connettori DisplayPort ora supportano finalmente lo standard DisplayPort 2.1b.

A differenza della serie TUF Gaming che offre 2 uscite HDMI, la Prime RTX 5080 OC si accontenta di una sola uscita HDMI 2.1b.

Un connettore 12VHPWR alimenta la scheda con la corrente necessaria. Asus offre un adattatore da 12VHPWR a 3x 8-pin per l'utilizzo di alimentatori non compatibili con ATX 3.x.

Come per altre schede Asus, un indicatore LED accanto al connettore 12VHPWR si illumina di rosso per indicare un collegamento improprio dell'adattatore o un'alimentazione inadeguata.

Prime RTX 5080 OC presenta un interruttore di modalità dual-BIOS che alterna le modalità Performance e Quiet. Abbiamo utilizzato la modalità Performance per tutti i benchmark e abbiamo anche confrontato i livelli di rumore della ventola tra le due modalità.

Non c'è un supporto per la GPU con un cacciavite integrato come quello che vediamo nella serie TUF Gaming, probabilmente a causa del fattore di forma compatto della scheda.

Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC è valutata per un boost clock predefinito di 2.655 MHz, che è 38 MHz più veloce della Founders Edition, pur mantenendo la stessa potenza grafica totale di 360 W (TGP). In modalità Performance, questa scheda può aumentare ulteriormente fino a un picco di 2.685 MHz.

È possibile aumentare il limite di potenza di un ulteriore 11% per una TGP massima di 400 W.

Asus Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC Edition ha prestazioni più o meno simili alla RTX 5080 FE nei benchmark sintetici. I boost marginalmente più elevati si traducono in un vantaggio del 2% nei test cumulativi 3DMark e Unigine.

Nel frattempo, la Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7900 XTX ottiene un guadagno del 4% rispetto alla Prime RTX 5080 OC in 3DMark Fire Strike Graphics, ma viene eliminata nei test Port Royal e Speed Way che prevedono il ray tracing.

Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC Edition supera la RTX 5080 FE solo di pochissimo nei test di gioco cumulativi a 1080p, 1440p e 4K Ultra, mentre supera la Radeon RX 7900 XTX del 13% in generale.

Il vantaggio maggiore rispetto alla RX 7900 XTX viene da F1 24 a 4K Ultra, dove la Prime RTX 5080 OC è più veloce del 47%.

È interessante notare che Alan Wake 2 vede la GPU di punta RDNA 3 mostrare un guadagno fino al 12% rispetto alla Prime RTX 5080 OC e un vantaggio fino al 18% rispetto alla RTX 5080 FE.

Nel complesso, la Prime RTX 5080 OC non fatica a raggiungere e persino a superare i 60 fps in 4K senza l'aiuto dell'upscaling nelle impostazioni Ultra in un buon numero di titoli AAA moderni.

Prime GeForce RTX 5080 OC Edition mostra un consumo energetico leggermente inferiore rispetto alla RTX 5080 FE in FurMark (1.280x720, senza AA), nonostante il clock più alto.
