L'AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X è il modello più accessibile dell'ultima generazione di Threadripper AMD. Con 649 dollari, il suo prezzo è simile a quello del Core i9-9900K di Intel. Con la sua architettura ZEN, AMD è stata in grado di migliorare notevolmente le prestazioni della CPU e la storia continua con ZEN+. Sono già stati introdotti quattro nuovi processori Threadripper basati su ZEN+ che vanno da 12 a 32 core. Queste CPU sono destinate principalmente a utenti con l'esigenza di eseguire un gran numero di applicazioni contemporaneamente, ad esempio ai giocatori che amano trasmettere in streaming il loro gameplay. Abbiamo già avuto l'AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X in prova, che si è rivelato essere leggermente più veloce del suo predecessore Threadripper 1950X grazie ai miglioramenti architettonici apportati con ZEN+.
I due modelli di fascia alta non sono rivolti ai giocatori, ma principalmente a creatori e innovatori. Questi processori portano nel loro nome il suffisso "WX", che potrebbe essere interpretato come "workstation". Gli altri due modelli portano un semplice suffisso "X" nel loro nome, e quelli sono rivolti ad appassionati e giocatori.
I prezzi partono da $649 e arrivano fino a $1.799 per il modello di punta 32-core / 64-thread. I prezzi possono sembrare a prima vista molto alti, ma considerando le prestazioni di Ryzen e la sua concorrenza osiamo dire che sono più che giustificati. Più spesso di quanto non lo sia una CPU Intel comparabile sarà significativamente più costosa senza offrire alcun beneficio di prestazioni apprezzabile.
Tutti i processori Threadripper vengono spediti senza un dissipatore di calore. Suggeriamo vivamente un sistema di raffreddamento AIO per garantire una rapida dissipazione del calore e un raffreddamento adeguato.

Stranamente il Threadripper 2970WX e il 2920X hanno prestazioni quasi identiche se si considera la valutazione complessiva delle prestazioni, nonostante il fatto che il primo abbia il doppio dei cores rispetto al secondo. Molte applicazioni semplicemente non sono in grado di gestire questo enorme numero di cores e threads. Questo potrebbe cambiare quando gli sviluppatori di software inizieranno ad ottimizzare le loro applicazioni di conseguenza, e dato che il numero di cores continua ad aumentare, ci aspettiamo che gli sviluppatori di software si adattino a questo sviluppo in futuro. L'octa-core Core i9-9900K di Intel ha un prezzo molto simile a quello del Ryzen Threadripper 2920X di AMD. Nella nostra valutazione delle prestazioni è riuscito a superare del 6% la CPU AMD a 12 cores di AMD grazie alle sue prestazioni single-core molto più elevate. Nel test Cinebench R15 a singolo thread è stato del 20% più veloce del 2920X; in cambio il concorrente di AMD è stato del 29% più veloce nel test multithread.

Cinebench R15 Multithread Loop

Eseguiamo il test multithread di Cinebench R15 in un loop per determinare le capacità di carico sostenuto di una CPU. Il consumo energetico medio durante l'esecuzione di questo test è stato di 149,7 W con una frequenza di clock media di 3,76 GHz. La temperatura di picco è stata misurata a circa 60 °C, il che è stato possibile grazie al radiatore AIO e a un radiatore da 240 mm. In media, la CPU ha ottenuto circa 2.600 punti in questo test con tre notevoli cadute intermedie. Sospettiamo che queste siano state causate dall'attività di background. Tutto sommato, il 2920X non ha mostrato segni di strozzamento o surriscaldamento sotto carico sostenuto.

L'attenzione di AMD per i giocatori e per coloro che amano trasmettere in streaming il loro gameplay per i modelli 2950X e 2950X sono più di una semplice trovata di marketing, come hanno dimostrato i nostri test. Rispetto al Threadripper 2970WX, che dispone di un totale di 24 cores e quindi di prestazioni multithread molto più elevate su carta, il 2920X è stato più veloce del 10% circa (performance rating). Il Core i9-9900K di Intel è stato un altro 10% più veloce. Lo svantaggio maggiore per la piattaforma Threadripper di AMD è il prezzo significativamente più alto rispetto alle Ryzen 5 e 7 basate su AM4, che sono anche molto veloci e possono essere considerate un consiglio per i giocatori.

I giocatori che riproducono il loro gameplay dovrebbero essere particolarmente interessati ad una buona performance complessiva, e il 2920X offre. Questo processore è ideale per il gioco, mentre esegue un gran numero di attività di background contemporaneamente. Se si usa già un Threadripper di prima generazione, l'aggiornamento non sarà evidente. Come già accennato in questa recensione più volte il AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X è un concorrente molto veloce e offre un molte prestazioni per il gioco così come il lavoro. Nel PCMark 10, la CPU a 12 cores è persino riuscita a battere la sua sorella a 24 cores. Sospettiamo che PCMark non sia più in grado di funzionare particolarmente bene con molti core. Nell'uso quotidiano il sistema è risultato scattante e liscio senza ritardi evidenti in ogni momento.
Come parte della seconda generazione di Threadripper, AMD ha introdotto uno strumento chiamato "StoreMi" per tutte le schede madri X399. Questo strumento combina fino a due unità di archiviazione con un massimo di 2 GB di RAM in un'unica unità. Analizza quindi i singoli modelli di utilizzo e memorizza le applicazioni e i file spesso utilizzati sul supporto di memorizzazione più veloce.

Raffreddamento fino a 180 W

Abbiamo installato lo stesso dissipatore ad acqua AIO già utilizzato per la recensione dell'AMD Threadripper 2970WX ai fini di questo test. L'Enermax Liqtech TR4 240 è specificato per una dissipazione di calore fino a 500 W, il che significa che è eccessivo per il 2920X, ma dovrebbe essere sufficientemente dimensionato anche per gli esperimenti di overclocking più ambiziosi. Tuttavia, le ventole erano molto evidenti sotto carico. Abbiamo lasciato inalterate le impostazioni delle ventole nel BIOS della scheda madre. Se lo si desidera, è possibile regolarle individualmente a proprio piacimento. L'installazione di questo particolare sistema di raffreddamento è un gioco da ragazzi e, a differenza del Wraith Ripper, che abbiamo usato per la nostra recensione Threadripper 2950X, non blocca il primo slot PCIe o copre gli slot RAM. Se il vostro case è abbastanza grande per questo dissipatore di calore è altamente raccomandabile.

Come i suoi fratelli, anche il 2920X segnala un offset di 27 °C rispetto alla scheda madre per garantire un raffreddamento corretto sotto carico. Ciò diventa particolarmente fastidioso quando le ventole funzionano più velocemente e rumorosamente del necessario.
Nel nostro stress test di un'ora il 2920X ha raggiunto il picco a soli 61 °C e 179 W, che è molto vicino al suo TDP specificato di 180 W. I regolatori di tensione della scheda madre hanno raggiunto un massimo di 70 °C ed erano quindi molto al di sotto della loro soglia di temperatura critica. Tuttavia, dobbiamo sottolineare che la nostra unità di recensione non è stata installata all'interno di un case, ed è necessario garantire una ventilazione adeguata per mantenere le temperature fresche.
Finché una CPU Threadripper funziona secondo le sue specifiche, tutti i sistemi di raffreddamento disponibili dovrebbero essere in grado di mantenerla fredda. Questo include il crescente numero di dissipatori per CPU TR4 basati su ventola, compatibili anche con la CPU AMD Threadripper 2990WX da 250 Watt. Se, tuttavia, si prevede di utilizzare una ventola non specificamente progettata e realizzata per questa particolare presa TR4, è necessario assicurarsi che sia abbastanza potente da garantire un raffreddamento adeguato.

Consumo energetico

È praticamente impossibile progettare un sistema ad alta efficienza energetica basato su X399 a causa dell'elevato livello di prestazioni della piattaforma. Di conseguenza, la nostra unità di test ha richiesto circa 82 W quando era già inattiva e ha raggiunto il picco di 288,8 W (sistema completo) durante l'esecuzione del nostro stress test Prime95. In media, il consumo energetico sotto carico massimo è stato di 285 W. La situazione peggiora ulteriormente quando la GPU entra in azione - 398 W in media e un picco di 444 W quando il gioco è davvero impressionante. Sorprendentemente, il consumo energetico della 2920X quando il gioco era inferiore a quello di tutti gli altri sistemi basati su AMD. Per garantire la comparabilità, tutti i sistemi - ad eccezione del Core i9-7900X - sono stati equipaggiati con la stessa GPU.

Overclocking

Grazie all'overclocking a moltiplicatore sbloccato, il Threadripper 2920X di AMD è il più semplice possibile. Siamo stati in grado di far funzionare la nostra unità di test a 4,3 GHz su tutti i 12 cores e siamo riusciti a completare un Cinebench R15 multithread run che ha prodotto 200 punti in più di prima (2.828 punti). Poiché anche il turbo boost single core del 2920X è a 4,3 GHz, le prestazioni single-thread non sono state influenzate dai nostri esperimenti di overclocking. Il consumo di potenza è aumentato drasticamente, tuttavia, ed è stato in media di 390 W durante l'esecuzione del test multithread R15; un enorme 118 W in più di prima.

Per $649, il Ryzen Threadripper 2920X di AMD offre un ottimo rapporto prezzo/prestazioni per i sistemi gaming che non sono utilizzati esclusivamente per il gioco. Anche se il marketing di AMD si concentra su appassionati e giocatori, coloro che amano lo streaming del proprio gameplay dovrebbero sicuramente dare un'occhiata più da vicino a questa CPU, soprattutto considerando il prezzo significativamente più alto del 2950X. Con 12 cores e supporto per SMT il Threadripper 2920X offre prestazioni multi-core più che dignitose. Sulla carta, le sue prestazioni single-thread sono inferiori rispetto all'attuale line-up di Intel, ma non siamo riusciti a notare alcuna differenza nell'uso quotidiano nel mondo reale.

Tuttavia, una scheda madre X399 vi farà tornare indietro molto più di una scheda madre AM4, e i moduli RAM devono essere acquistati in quantità di quattro o otto per sfruttare al meglio il controller di memoria quad-channel integrato nella CPU. Questi costi elevati spingeranno sicuramente molti utenti verso il Ryzen 7 o Ryzen 5.

Nel complesso, l'AMD Threadripper 2920X offre grandi prestazioni di gioco e non solo. Trasforma il vostro PC di gioco in una vera e propria workstation, che può facilmente gestire più macchine virtuali contemporaneamente.

Se siete alla ricerca di un sistema a prova di futuro, dovreste sicuramente prendere in considerazione la piattaforma Threadripper di AMD. Il 2920X è un veloce concorrente di 12 cores ad un prezzo equo.
