The irony, here, is that Apple has made a MacBook Pro that's arguably a creative human's dream. More powerful than before, more flexible; its most potent chips, paired with its best connectivity, and its most pleasant powerful. Forgive me, then, if I'm far more excited about how real, flesh-and-blood people tap the potency on offer. As usual, life on the bleeding edge may leave you waiting for everything else to catch up. You're paying, after all, for longevity: there aren't really all that many Thunderbolt 5 peripherals out there, for example, but at least your Mac will be ready for them. In the meantime, you're also paying for the joy of shaving a little time off each photo and video export, each render, and each compile. For mainstream users, the M4 Pro is probably the sweet spot: more than enough grunt, but with less sticker shock.

Even though there’s no question that the newest MacBook Pros are more powerful and have better features, my buying advice remains the same. If you already own an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, ask yourself if you have already reached its limits and if the newest M4 chips can make a significant improvement to your workflow. For 99% of these people, I’m guessing the new MacBook Pros are nice to have, not a need to have. Folks still using an Intel-based Mac can and should upgrade without hesitation. Why haven’t you upgraded already? Should you consider a base model 14-inch MacBook Pro over a MacBook Air? Even though there’s no question that the newest MacBook Pros are more powerful and have better features, my buying advice remains the same. If you already own an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, ask yourself if you have already reached its limits and if the newest M4 chips can make a significant improvement to your workflow. For 99% of these people, I’m guessing the new MacBook Pros are nice to have, not a need to have. Folks still using an Intel-based Mac can and should upgrade without hesitation. Why haven’t you upgraded already? Should you consider a base model 14-inch MacBook Pro over a MacBook Air? I think you definitely should if your budget allows for it and you don't mind the extra heft.

Cambieremmo se avessimo un M3? Beh, dipende cosa ci fate e quale M3 ma soprattutto dovreste valutare che prestazioni vi offre: se va alla grande non c’è motivo di aggiornare. Se però avete un M1 o un M2 allora vale la pena farci un pensierino, sempre naturalmente considerando le vostre necessità.

Rarely has it made so much sense to go for the basic MacBook Pro model! Thanks to the standard 16 GB of unified RAM and 512 GB of internal memory, you can buy a mobile workstation suitable for everyday use for $1,599. Of course, this is still a lot of money, but even the base model we reviewed offers an exceptionally good price-to-performance ratio. As a high-end laptop, the MacBook Pro hardly left anything to be desired. The display is even brighter than in the previous model, apparently uses better technology with Quantom Dot, and can now be configured with nano-texture glass. The fact that Apple offers anti-glare displays in all configurations is fair and I like it better than the current iMac with M4 SoC. This makes the MacBook Pro much more suitable for working outdoors, which is extremely welcome.

First, the SSD performance is slightly behind the competition. A touch screen would still be a welcome addition, the MacBook can still get very expensive and there's no big design refresh again this year. We'd also say that those with M2 or M3 machines probably don't need to switch unless they have serious professional workflows and their laptops are struggling. But if you have an older Intel machine that's running out of steam then you’ll struggle to believe how much better it is. The MacBook Pro is still mighty and it’s now even better than before. The MacBook Pro has been stellar since 2021, and now that it’s got a new screen option and a faster chip, it’s a lot better than I expected. I don’t think anyone with an M2 or M3 Pro will need to upgrade immediately unless they’re constantly working outside in the sun. However, I think people with M1 Pros who feel like they could use a little more power will be pleased with the M4 Pro since it’s so much more instantaneous than the 2021 version. Personally, since I mainly edit smaller batches of photos and mid-level videos for YouTube, I think the M1 Pro I have still has enough power that I wouldn’t complain about it. However, I did notice and appreciate the extra speed the M4 offers.

MacBook Pro M4 Review: Speed demon

The MacBook Pro has been stellar since 2021, and now that it’s got a new screen option and a faster chip, it’s a lot better than I expected. I don’t think anyone with an M2 or M3 Pro will need to upgrade immediately unless they’re constantly working outside in the sun. However, I think people with M1 Pros who feel like they could use a little more power will be pleased with the M4 Pro since it’s so much more instantaneous than the 2021 version. Personally, since I mainly edit smaller batches of photos and mid-level videos for YouTube, I think the M1 Pro I have still has enough power that I wouldn’t complain about it. However, I did notice and appreciate the extra speed the M4 offers.

Apple: Apple è una società statunitense fondata nel 1976 da Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak e Ronald Wayne. Con sede a Cupertino, in California, l'azienda è nota per i suoi prodotti innovativi come iPhone, iPad, Mac e Apple Watch e produce computer ed elettronica di consumo, nonché sistemi operativi e software applicativi. Apple è anche un fornitore leader di software e servizi come App Store, iTunes e iCloud.

Apple si è guadagnata la reputazione di azienda che si concentra sul design e sulla facilità d'uso. Per quanto riguarda i loro notebook, sono per lo più nel segmento di fascia alta, hanno il proprio sistema operativo, ma eseguono anche Windows sui Macbook più recenti.

Apple è una delle aziende più preziose al mondo e ha un fedele seguito di clienti e fan. L'azienda ha anche una forte presenza nel settore dell'intrattenimento, con servizi come Apple Music e Apple TV+. Nel 2023, Apple deteneva una quota di mercato di circa l'8% delle vendite globali di PC, classificandosi al 4° posto dopo Lenovo, HP e Dell.

Queste schede grafiche dovrebbero essere in grado di far funzionare tutti i giochi attuali con un framerates fluido ma rinunciando al livello di dettaglio massimo. Specialmente i giochi impegnativi come Crysis, Age of Conan, o Mass Effect sono utilizzabili soltanto con impostazioni grafiche ridotte. I giochi meno pesanti (e più datati), come Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, o Battlefield 2142 possono essere giocati con livello di dettagli più alto.

Apple M4 Pro 20-Core GPU: Un adattatore grafico integrato progettato da Apple e integrato nel SoC a 14 core Apple M4 Pro. Dispone di 20 "core" e ha accesso ad almeno 24 GB di RAM LPDDR5x veloce da 273 GB/s, a seconda della configurazione. Le sue prestazioni di gioco sono almeno pari a quelle della GTX 1660 Ti Laptop. Quando il carico della CPU e della GPU è elevato, l'iGPU consuma poco più di 30 W, secondo il software di monitoraggio.

Apple M4 Pro 16-Core GPU: Una scheda grafica integrata di Apple, che è integrata nel SoC a 12 core Apple M4 Pro. Dispone di 16 dei 20 core della GPU e, a seconda della configurazione, ha accesso ad almeno 24 GB di memoria LPDDR5x veloce (memoria unificata) con 273 GB/s nel chip.

Apple M4 Max 32-Core GPU: Un adattatore grafico integrato piuttosto veloce progettato da Apple e integrato nel SoC a 14 core Apple M4 Max. Presenta 32 "core" e ha accesso ad almeno 36 GB di RAM LPDDR5x veloce da 410 GB/s, a seconda della configurazione. Le sue prestazioni di gioco saranno circa pari a quelle della RTX 4050 Laptop.

Apple M4 10-Core GPU: Un adattatore grafico integrato progettato da Apple che presenta 10 core. Questa iGPU è integrata nei SoC Apple M4 (sia nella versione a 9 core che in quella a 10 core); utilizza l'architettura di memoria unificata e non è molto diversa dalla GPU M3 a 10 core in termini di caratteristiche. I primi confronti di benchmark tra la GPU M4 a 10 core e la GPU M3 a 10 core indicano guadagni di prestazioni fino al 15%, ma è importante affermare subito che la sostenibilità delle prestazioni del chip M4 è destinata ad essere molto scarsa a causa del telaio sottile dei nuovi iPad, che non dispone di alcun tipo di raffreddamento attivo. Proprio come il resto del chip Apple M3, l'adattatore grafico è prodotto con un processo TSMC di "seconda generazione a 3 nm".

Apple M4:

M4 Pro (14 cores): Un potente processore con architettura ARM (SoC) che ha debuttato nel settembre 2024. Dispone di 10 core CPU ad alte prestazioni che funzionano fino a 4,5 GHz e di 4 core efficienti che funzionano fino a 2,6 GHz. Sono inclusi anche la GPU M4 a 20 core e almeno 24 GB di memoria veloce LPDDR5x da 273 GB/s on-package, nonché il supporto USB 4 e Thunderbolt 5. La parte CPU del SoC è veloce quanto il 16-core M3 Max, mentre l'iGPU è veloce almeno quanto la GTX 1660 Ti Laptop nei giochi. Il TDP è di ~75 W.

M4 Pro (12 cores): La versione più piccola dell'M4 Pro al momento del lancio, con solo 10 dei 12 core della CPU (8 core per le prestazioni fino a 4,5 GHz e 4 core per l'efficienza fino a 2,6 GHz).

M4 Max (14 cores): Un potente processore con architettura ARM (SoC) che ha debuttato nel settembre 2024. Presenta 10 core CPU ad alte prestazioni e 4 core efficienti. Sono inclusi anche la GPU M4 a 32 core e almeno 36 GB di memoria LPDDR5x da 410 GB/s on-package, oltre al supporto USB 4 e Thunderbolt 5. La parte CPU del SoC è leggermente più veloce di quella a 16 core. La porzione di CPU del SoC è destinata ad essere solo leggermente più veloce del 16-core M3 Max, mentre l'iGPU potrebbe essere veloce come la RTX 4050 Laptop nei giochi. L'obiettivo di potenza TDP è molto probabilmente di ~85 W.

M4 (10 cores): Un system-on-a-chip (SoC) con architettura ARM dotato di 10 core CPU (4 core di prestazioni e 6 core di efficienza), un motore neurale a 16 core e una GPU a 10 core con supporto RT. L'M4 è stato lanciato nel maggio 2024 come parte di un evento di lancio dell'iPad; secondo i primi dati, il chip da 3 nm è destinato ad essere dal 10% al 25% più veloce dell'M3.
