In sintesi, il MacBook Pro 14" M4 rappresenta un laptop completo e potente, con miglioramenti incrementali che rendono giustizia alla linea Pro di Apple. Rispetto alle generazioni precedenti, quelle per intenderci dotate di chip M2 e M3, questa volta il salto generazionale in termini di prestazioni e consumi è evidente e va a perfezionare ulteriormente una macchina che era già ai vertici della categoria e consolida così la sua posizione. Con queste prestazioni elevate, l'ottima autonomia e un display eccellente, questo modello è senza dubbio una scelta azzeccata per i creativi che necessitano di un sistema affidabile e portatile. Anche considerando alcune limitazioni e compromessi rispetto ai modelli con M4 Pro e M4 Max, questa variante base rimane un laptop di alta fascia in grado di soddisfare le esigenze della maggior parte degli utenti.

Rarely has it made so much sense to go for the basic MacBook Pro model! Thanks to the standard 16 GB of unified RAM and 512 GB of internal memory, you can buy a mobile workstation suitable for everyday use for $1,599. Of course, this is still a lot of money, but even the base model we reviewed offers an exceptionally good price-to-performance ratio. As a high-end laptop, the MacBook Pro hardly left anything to be desired. The display is even brighter than in the previous model, apparently uses better technology with Quantom Dot, and can now be configured with nano-texture glass. The fact that Apple offers anti-glare displays in all configurations is fair and I like it better than the current iMac with M4 SoC. This makes the MacBook Pro much more suitable for working outdoors, which is extremely welcome.

The introduction of Thunderbolt 5 ports, an M4 processor that's better built for machine learning, a more capable webcam, and a brighter display funnel into a form factor that should play well with office workers, digital nomads, students, professional creatives, and more. For most users, the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro is the way to go. If you need more internal storage than the 512GB, bumping up to the 1TB tier for $200 is not the worst idea. Beyond that, I'd advise picking up an external SSD, which gives you more storage than what Apple does and for significantly less money.

There is no doubt that the MacBook Pro 14 is the perfect general purpose laptop I have tried. Yet, I have two (minor) gripes. One, despite its great hardware, including a powerful GPU, the lack of AAA games continues to keep the MacBook Pro from realising its full-potential for certain users. It is a great machine for work, and a great general-purpose laptop. But lack of popular AAA games means it is missing some fun quotient. Apple is working on improving the game library on Mac — Resident Evil games for example — but it is not there yet. And two, some of the upgrades seem overly expensive. For example, the nano-texture display. Or extra RAM and storage. At the same time, the Apple Silicon is so good that it has created a problem of plenty for MacBooks.

As a machine for high end creators, there’s no better option than the MacBook Pro. For those of us that don’t need to crunch through huge audio and video files, it’s still a great option. Arguably it’s more machine than you’ll ever need – I know my general use case will barely challenge even the standard M4 model, let alone the M4 Pro or M4 Max versions. If you have a MacBook Pro M3 or even a MacBook Pro M2, then chances are you don't really need to upgrade yet. Unless you're a power user maxing out that processor, the seconds this chip saves isn't going to change your world. Saying a machine is too powerful is hardly a criticism though, and it does mean that this laptop will last you for many years to come.

The MacBook Pro M4 is pretty close to the perfect laptop. You get fantastic performance from the M4 chip, useful Apple Intelligence features (though you’ll have to be patient as more roll out), a better webcam and obscenely long battery life. It’s just too bad my favorite feature — the nano-texture display — costs $150 more. I do have a few nitpicks at the $1,949 price of my review unit. First, the SSD performance is slightly behind the competition. And if you’re into gaming you may want to step up to a beefier M4 Pro model with a 16-core or 20-core GPU, compared to the 10-core GPU on the base model. Overall, though, the M4 MacBook Pro is the laptop I’d buy with my own money. And it’s one of the best laptops you can buy, period.

That doesn't mean you can't game on a MacBook. In one of the few recent, natively running games, Hades 2, the MacBook 14, with its low GPU core count, consistently hit 120fps for me. It might have been able to hit higher, but the display only supports either fixed refresh rates up to 60Hz or variable rate ProMotion, which caps it at 120Hz. In order to play at higher frame rates, you have to connect to an external monitor -- which is also on my list of things to test before finalizing my reviews.

The MacBook Pro M4 is yet another top-notch laptop from Apple. It's supremely powerful, has an even better screen - we’d highly recommend adding that nano-texture - and will outlast all of the firm's previous portable PCs when it comes to battery life. There's no longer a premium for choosing the Space Black version and things could get even better when Apple Intelligence arrives in December. A touch screen would still be a welcome addition, the MacBook can still get very expensive and there's no big design refresh again this year. We'd also say that those with M2 or M3 machines probably don't need to switch unless they have serious professional workflows and their laptops are struggling. But if you have an older Intel machine that's running out of steam then you’ll struggle to believe how much better it is. The MacBook Pro is still mighty and it’s now even better than before. Just make sure you need all that power before tapping the buy button.

With the exception of the folks who are frustrated by the reflection and glare in their MacBook Pro’s screens, the MacBook Pro M4 is less a must-get than it is an improved option over last year’s models. I’m grateful that Apple increased its entry-level memory, brought parity to the MacBook Pro’s USB-C port count and also increased the speed of those ports for select models as well. To have this all in a MacBook whose entry-level price stayed flat year over year and has slightly improved performance? The MacBook Pro has been stellar since 2021, and now that it’s got a new screen option and a faster chip, it’s a lot better than I expected. I don’t think anyone with an M2 or M3 Pro will need to upgrade immediately unless they’re constantly working outside in the sun. However, I think people with M1 Pros who feel like they could use a little more power will be pleased with the M4 Pro since it’s so much more instantaneous than the 2021 version. Personally, since I mainly edit smaller batches of photos and mid-level videos for YouTube, I think the M1 Pro I have still has enough power that I wouldn’t complain about it. However, I did notice and appreciate the extra speed the M4 offers.

Apple M4 10-Core GPU: Un adattatore grafico integrato progettato da Apple che presenta 10 core. Questa iGPU è integrata nei SoC Apple M4 (sia nella versione a 9 core che in quella a 10 core); utilizza l'architettura di memoria unificata e non è molto diversa dalla GPU M3 a 10 core in termini di caratteristiche. I primi confronti di benchmark tra la GPU M4 a 10 core e la GPU M3 a 10 core indicano guadagni di prestazioni fino al 15%, ma è importante affermare subito che la sostenibilità delle prestazioni del chip M4 è destinata ad essere molto scarsa a causa del telaio sottile dei nuovi iPad, che non dispone di alcun tipo di raffreddamento attivo. Proprio come il resto del chip Apple M3, l'adattatore grafico è prodotto con un processo TSMC di "seconda generazione a 3 nm".

Queste schede grafiche dovrebbero essere in grado di far funzionare tutti i giochi attuali con un framerates fluido ma rinunciando al livello di dettaglio massimo. Specialmente i giochi impegnativi come Crysis, Age of Conan, o Mass Effect sono utilizzabili soltanto con impostazioni grafiche ridotte. I giochi meno pesanti (e più datati), come Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, o Battlefield 2142 possono essere giocati con livello di dettagli più alto.
