I’m loosing on ports and typing experience, but I’m gaining plenty, so I’m happy to make the switch. For everyone else, I believe the XPS 13 can be a solid option if you need a compact, well built and fast computer for everyday activities. It’s not without rivals, and I’m looking here and the Acer Aspire S7-393 and even the Core M Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro and Asus Zenbook UX305, plus the other devices that will be released in the future, including that rumored 12 inch Macbook Air. But it should face them all head-high.

In fact, there’s only one thing that really bugs me about the XPS 13, and that’s Dell’s stubborn insistence on forcing dynamic contrast on at all times. It's a stupid decision, in my opinion. That aside, I absolutely love this thing. I could wish for a better GPU – yes, I really do want a slim, gorgeous ultraportable that also plays GTA V – but it'll be a few years until ultraportables routinely come with decent gaming-class graphics. As it stands, this is a powerful, light, lovely ultraportable that comes a hair’s breadth from perfection. I think I can settle for that.

The XPS 13 is remarkable machine. It is perfect for someone who wants a crisp sharp display, especially if you like to edit photos on the go like me. It is very solid in terms of build quality and should last long. In terms of performance, I had no complaints. This isn’t a gaming machine, but it can handle less resource hogging games. So yes, I am not left behind when I have impromptu CS 1.6 sessions with my friends. I expected a bit more out of the battery, but with that resolution I think a 6.5-7 hour battery life is acceptable.

If you’re not dead set on getting a proper laptop, there are also a number of convertibles at the same price point, like the Surface Pro 4, that are also worth a look.

Oh, and it's cheaper; the Spectre I reviewed with an Intel i7 chip, 8 GB RAM, and a 256 GB SSD rings the till at $140 less than the Dell. It’s has XPS 13 in the name, but this is a very different laptop to the standard XPS 13. It’s less powerful, but lighter and should have better battery life. It’s a case of horses for courses: if thin and light is your priority and you won’t be doing much in the way of intense multimedia work, it’s very attractive. Still, the regular model will always be better value for those who don’t want a 2-in-1 design.

The new Dell also offers a very comfortable keyboard and top-notch OLED display (if you’re willing to splurge). The reason why the XPS 13 Plus doesn’t earn a higher rating is because of its short battery life (though you can expect more endurance from a non-OLED model) and its capacitive function row, which looks and feels a bit chintzy for a $1,200 laptop. And some may be turned off by the dearth of ports and how warm the bottom can get. In this price range I prefer the MacBook Air M2 for its much longer battery life, more ports and less fussy touchpad. But overall the XPS 13 Plus is a good option if you prefer Windows. It has a great looking, modern design and impeccable build quality, along with top shelf materials and components, like its killer 3.5K OLED display option in our test system. However, the combination of Intel's powerful but power-hungry and warm-running Alder Lake 12th Gen Core i7-1280P 14-core chip, seem to be a bit too much for Dell's thermal solution to handle in this wafer-thin laptop design. Though noise output from the machine was very tame and actually best-of-breed in the 2.5 - 3 lb laptop category, the bottom of the machine can get uncomfortably warm at its Ultra Performance power and thermal settings. Battery life left something to be desired as well. In addition, with only two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports available on this machine, some users may find this laptop's IO expansion options to be too limited. We really wish Dell had not removed the microSD card reader as well.

Are you ready for the future? Dell certainly is, and for them, the future is the XPS 13 Plus. Although the laptop sports an incredibly minimalistic and polarizing design, it doesn’t skimp in the power department — thanks to its Core i7 processor. The 4K OLED display is a vision of loveliness and the keyboard is comfortable, which just serves to sweeten the pot. However, as beautiful as the display is, it’s also a drain on the battery life. And then there’s that polarizing design. Some, like myself, will be drawn to the ultra-minimalistic aesthetic while others will take issue with the invisible touchpad and absent headset jack. Those looking for a more traditional take on the laptop should check out the $1,549 Acer Swift 5. If you’re team Apple, the $1,899 MacBook Air M2 is the way to go. Are you ready for the future? Dell certainly is, and for them, the future is the XPS 13 Plus. Although the laptop sports an incredibly minimalistic and polarizing design, it doesn’t skimp in the power department — thanks to its Core i7 processor. The 4K OLED display is a vision of loveliness and the keyboard is comfortable, which just serves to sweeten the pot. However, as beautiful as the display is, it’s also a drain on the battery life. And then there’s that polarizing design. Some, like myself, will be drawn to the ultra-minimalistic aesthetic while others will take issue with the invisible touchpad and absent headset jack. Those looking for a more traditional take on the laptop should check out the $1,549 Acer Swift 5. If you’re team Apple, the $1,899 MacBook Air M2 is the way to go. But if you’re looking for a piece of the future right now, then the $1,910 ($1,273 starting) Dell XPS 13 Plus is for you.

The Dell XPS 13 9345 is a solid-built, powerful, and light companion on the go. Its battery life is amazing despite the modest capacity of just 55Wh – 20 hours of videos. Still, keep in mind that this result is achieved with the default 1200p IPS panel. If you get a machine with one of the optional high-res touchscreens this could hinder more or less the autonomous work. The upgradability is almost non-existent but that’s something normal for all other machines that are based on the Qualcomm SoC. The gadget supports Type-C charging which sounds great on paper. However, since this laptop has just two USB4 ports, when the power adapter is plugged in, only one of the ports is available. Perhaps you have to buy an external USB splitter to deal with this issue. For normal work, this fella feels super responsive.

Performance is basically on par, with more than enough desktop muscle for office work and simpler creative tasks, and Windows on ARM is getting better all the time. That it’s also slightly cheaper is another win. The issues I had with the old Dell XPS 13 haven’t been fixed, though. The capacitive shortcuts are more flashy than functional, the keyboard layout takes some learning, and the touchpad was especially troublesome during my testing – though this could’ve been an isolated issue with my review unit. If I was in the market for a Copilot+ laptop, I’d probably reach for a Microsoft Surface Pro or Surface Laptop before one of these.

When I think of Dell's XPS 13 series of Ultrabooks, I think of generally good, highly portable laptops that are a bit overpriced. But the Dell XPS 13 (2024), equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite, is one of the best of this line thanks to its excellent performance and battery life. Much improved ventilation doesn't throttle the CPU, the display is phenomenal, and the build quality is leagues better than previous models. The only real downsides are the poor port selection, the inaccessible toolbar, and the steep pricing.

The switch to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite was supposed to provide a serious uptick in performance and efficiency over Intel’s Meteor Lake chipset. Surprisingly, while the performance is certainly there, battery life remained closer than I would have imagined. It’s fair to say that you won’t get better battery life than the Intel version of the XPS 13, and the MacBook Air M3 remains pretty far ahead. At the same time, the XPS 13 9345 ran a lot cooler, which is a major benefit. That alone is enough to warrant serious consideration. Then again, there will always be some degree of some uncertainty over compatibility with Windows on Arm, and it does cost an extra $150. I think that’s worth the upgrade, but it may not be a straightforward choice. Either way, I can say that if you want a small, light, and fast laptop, the XPS 13 (9345) is a solid choice.
