A dirla tutta, molte scelte tecniche e software di questo ROG Phone dovrebbero essere condivise anche da altri brand. Qualche esempio? Il sistema di dissipazione che permette a questo ROG Phone 9 Pro di gestire alla grande un SoC strutturalmente molto diverso rispetto al passato come lo Snapdragon 8 Elite. Qualche altro esempio potrebbe essere l’estremo controllo che si può avere sul proprio hardware, la volontà di non avere nessun tipo di rinuncia (vedi il jack audio), la possibilità di avere più scelte per ogni singolo aspetto dell’interfaccia. Chiaramente non è uno smartphone perfetto, in particolare per l’esperienza di registrazione video, non è nemmeno particolarmente economico.

Niente di strano o deprecabile nel comportamento di ASUS che anzi è quello della stragrande maggioranza degli operatori del settore: semplicemente bisogna mettere in conto di non potersi aspettare un grande effetto wow da un dispositivo che, pur con opportune limature e aggiornamenti e con un chipset effettivamente superiore, è in fin dei conti piuttosto simile al precedente. ROG Phone 9 Pro rimane comunque il gaming phone più completo del mercato, con tutta la potenza che serve per primeggiare nei benchmark e con abbastanza virtù da farsi rispettare anche al di fuori dell'ambito videoludico. Insomma, il nuovo corso della gamma magari stavolta non stupisce ma continua a convincere.

Come ogni anno però dobbiamo mettere l’accento su alcune criticità e se la fotocamera è da sempre un punto debole, a fine 2024 pesano anche due ulteriori aspetti: aggiornamenti e mancanza di eSIM. Se devo però fare un’altra critica riguarda il time-to-market: Rog Phone 9 viene infatti presentato ufficialmente oggi ma sarà disponibile solo dalla seconda metà di gennaio, ovvero tra due mesi esatti. Non si tratta di un tempo esagerato ma il problema è la concorrenza: nei prossimi due mesi usciranno infatti diversi Top Smartphone con 8 Elite e a fine gennaio l’attenzione verrà catalizzata da Samsung con la serie S25.

Last year’s ROG Phone didn’t fully fling open the door to the non-hardcore gaming crowd – but it definitely took off the deadbolt. Things have changed dramatically for 2024, even though the ROG Phone 9 Pro brings a few upgrades that’ll keep up its wider audience appeal. The main camera has improved for both stills and video; the bigger battery bring epic endurance when you’re not gaming; and the two-colour Anime Vision LEDs are especially easy on the eye, without going OTT on the rest of the styling front. There’s also no denying this is a rapid phone, and even if you’re not bolting on the external cooler it’ll demolish any game you’d care to throw at it.

It’s a great device for sure and given its price of RM3,999, you’re getting a 2025 flagship-caliber smartphone. You can take good photos with this, so you don’t have to feel like you’re making a huge compromise by going for a gaming phone but if camera is the focal point of your smartphone purchase decision, you might be better off with a standard flagship as those can give better colors and details. None however can match the battery life that this one offers.

The ROG Phone 9 has been incredibly fun to use and play games with. It’s been fun bumping all the specs to their max and playing Wild Rift without the device getting warm. There were a lot of AI features, but most were game-related, and I didn’t use them for the game I was playing. The handset doesn’t take the best pictures, but if you’re not someone who takes a lot of shots, you probably won’t mind, especially if you’re a geek who just wants to play. The ROG Phone 9 is a solid phone, and I’m happy I got the chance to play around with the handset.

SD 8 Elite: SoC (System on a Chip) di fascia alta per smartphone, presentato alla fine del 2024. Integra due core Oryon Gen 2 Prime veloci con una frequenza fino a 4,32 GHz e 6 core Oryon Gen 2 Performance più piccoli con una frequenza fino a 3,53 GHz.
