If we forget that this phone has a stylus for a moment, it looks like yet another mid-range smartphone that has average features and specs. But still, the TCL stylus 5G smartphone has got some decent perks that are worth noting, which include NEG, dedicated secondary storage, impressive display quality, adequate camera results, and long-lasting battery life support. Overall, the phone doesn’t disappoint that much at its price point. But if you are looking for more power and better customization features, you can check out the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12, which offers lots of interesting privileges that generally don’t appear in mid-range segment phones. But still, if you are looking for convenient usage and you frequently take notes, then the TCL Stylus 5G is for you. But if that’s not the case, then you should look for better alternatives.

With a low price of $258 on T-Mobile (for some reason its $10 on MetroPCS), you are getting a budget phone that tries to do a bit of everything. While it has a large screen it is a bit squarish and heavy in the hand. Camera quality is okay in bright settings. Best feature on the TCL Stylus 5G is its namesake which is the stylus. Taking notes and drawing pictures on it is its strong suit and you can even do some digital signatures while you are at it too. It could be cool for the Back to School crowd that needs to take notes.

The TCL STYLUS 5G is an excellent alternative to the S22 Ultra if you’re looking to save money and are okay with many features the S22 has that this will not. It’s not a direct competitor to the S22 Ultra, but it gets you a stylus, a decent big display, a big battery, and decent midrange specs. The wallpaper used on this phone is from Rippaverse Comics. You can check them out and the company’s first comic book (Isom) at their website.

This phone does not look, feel, nor perform like a $258 phone. The display is gorgeous, the design is really great, the camera is pretty good, and the performance is more than good enough. The only downsides of this phone would have to be the battery life and the speakers. Other than those aspects, this is a great phone, and I highly recommend that you pick up this phone. It’s more than just a cheap Galaxy Note clone. It’s an excellent companion for note-takers and video watchers alike.

Plus, the phone comes with a stylus, which is making a comeback. It’s an awesome way to control and write on your smartphone. With smartphones taking up more and more of the computing power you need these days, a stylus is a great addition for taking notes and signing documents. When school is in session, I use my stylus daily to help my daughter with math problems. The closest competition you can get is the Moto G Stylus 5G which costs almost double the price. When you put all that together, this is a pretty great deal.

Probably not. If you’re in the market for a phone with a stylus, you’re probably only looking at the S22 Ultra or the Moto G Stylus lineup. Even in the sub-$300 bracket, it's harder to justify a 4G phone provided you plan to use it for a few years. You have to spend $500 to get that from Motorola. So, the TCL Stylus 5G does have its place—just a very small one. I really like the stylus-centric features TCL included—along with its fast note-taking, and focus on handwriting recognition, but I wish the rest of the OS had as much fine-tuning. It's a shame because the phone has a decent display and stylus. If you’re looking at the Moto G Stylus 5G, stepping down to the TCL Stylus 5G will probably have too many tradeoffs for your taste, especially since T-Mobile carries a $300 cut-down version of the Moto G Stylus 5G. If you were only looking at the 4G Moto G Stylus, the extra eight bucks for TCL's 5G phone is worth it.

The TCL Stylus 5G is a decent budget smartphone, even if the stylus experience is limited in its feature set. You can easily buy a third-party stylus and gain most of the same functionality on any smartphone (apart from the handwriting recognition perhaps). Still, TCL manages to pack the handset with solid components at an affordable price and the stylus fits snugly in the chassis. Our main complaints center on the short battery life and underwhelming cellular performance. If you're in the market for a big-screen phone under $300, the TCL Stylus 5G is still worth considering, but the Samsung Galaxy A32 is a better buy thanks to its superior battery life, connectivity, and software.

Folks looking for a cheap Galaxy Note competitor will be disappointed with the TCL Stylus 5G's passive stylus, which can't recognize the difference between a hand and a stylus while writing. If you just need a great overall phone for $250 that performs well, has a great UI, good battery life, and a good main camera, this is a solid choice.

The TCL Stylus 5G is largely unremarkable, and even considering its very reasonable price, it’s hard to recommend. The stylus works well, and its pre-downloaded handwriting apps do a little more than the standard options from Motorola. But as a total package, it falls well short of Motorola’s 5G and non-5G stylus phones with a lackluster screen, middling performance, and one less year of software support. If a stylus is a must-have and there’s some flexibility in your budget, then the 2022 Moto G Stylus 5G is well worth the extra money. The version that T-Mobile sells has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is less than the 8GB / 256GB unlocked version we reviewed, but it costs $300 rather than $500. For $40 more, it is a good bit pricier than the TCL Stylus 5G, but it’s a much better device with an extra year of security updates promised.

Overall, the TCL Stylus 5G is a phone worthy of consideration if you are looking for an affordable phone with stylus support as long as you can operate it without resting your hand on the display. It wasn't a real issue for me as I tend to use the stylus on all of my phones without resting my hand on the display. The TCL Stylus 5G offers a solid experience at a fairly low price.

For a phone at the lower end of the market, the STYLUS 5G does a pretty good job. The title suggested this phone was going to emphasize its stylus and it does do that every step of the way. It is integrated very well and makes tasks like note-taking an absolute breeze. The software deserves as much praise as the hardware, having a notepad available the second you pull the stylus out is a solution to a problem I never knew I had. The promise of an update at some point might also see a few issues ironed out and some features improved. The lock screen notes feature would be far better if it auto-transcribed like the notes in the Nebo for TCL app does. Equally, if a noted down date or time is automatically linked with your calendar app, that would be a major improvement. As with all phones, you need to ask yourself what you'll be using it for and go from there. If you want an exceptional camera in all conditions, you're really going to struggle at this price point and the STYLUS 5G isn't the exception. Equally, if you want a stylus-based phone because you're an artist who likes to sketch on the go,

The TCL Stylus 5G is the first stylus phone from TCL, promising a pocketable handwriting experience at a lower price. Starting at $258, it undercuts one of the very few budget stylus smartphones, the Moto G Stylus (2022) while upping the ante by shipping with Android 12. It's far from an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, but it is nonetheless an option for those note-takers who revel in the feedback of pressing a pen to paper — er, stylus to screen. And with appropriate specs for the price (albeit, a wariness based on our previous experience with MediaTek chipsets), the TCL Stylus 5G could become one of the best cheap phones by delivering where the Moto G Stylus fell short. We briefly demoed the TCL Stylus 5G and plan to conduct a full review after collecting benchmarks, grading photo comparisons and gauging performance. But for now, here are our TCL Stylus 5G first impressions.
