TCL 50 XL Nxtpaper’s key selling point would be the Nxtpaper technology integration. With this, the display is reflection-resistant and reduces screen glare issues. Apart from the display powers, the phone is just another mid-range phone. It has a bunch of mismatched components that lead to an incomplete product. The device might not be the best choice for camera usage. But still, the phone shines when it comes to battery life. Yet, the performance level is mediocre. From this, you might get an idea that this phone is average in almost every aspect. However, we still consider the TCL 50 XL Nxtpaper as one of the best options released among the TCL 50-series. Instead, consider getting the Motorola Moto G Power (2024) edition will be a better deal with clean UI and wireless charging support. Nonetheless, we would recommend you go through other alternatives and make every buck worth it.

The TCL 50 XL 5G features a large 6.78-inch 120Hz display, 6GB of RAM, and a 5,010mAh battery, making it a strong contender in the budget segment. It runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 6100 Plus chipset and Android 14 out of the box.

At a price of $160, it handles itself nicely and not a snail as far as speed. It’s a cool device for that kid’s first phone or perhaps an older family member that wants to take pictures, make a call, or read the latest news.

For the price, the TCL 50 XL 5G is not a terrible phone (that honor goes to the Moto G 2024), but it’s also not amazing. It definitely has a unique design with the textured material on the rear and a distinctive sheen that I don’t typically see on smartphones, let alone one at this price. The display isn’t too shabby for an LCD, as colors are bright and vivid, with text being sharp and crisp. NXTVISION’s visual enhancements are also a nice bonus. The 120Hz refresh rate does provide smooth scrolling, but the midrange chipset does have a little bit of stutter every now and then. It’s also nice to see a phone that still has a 3.5mm headphone jack and expandable storage.

The TCL 50 XL offers a large screen and plenty of basic features like a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack at an affordable price. But its cameras produce poor still images, the screen is somewhat dim, and battery life falls short of competitors. You're better off spending $40 more on the Galaxy A15 5G, which takes better photos, feels more manageable in hand, and is promised many years of software updates, making it our Editors' Choice winner in this price range.

TCL deserves recognition for cramming so many features from pricier devices into the $160 50 XL 5G. This includes its 1080p-resolution 120Hz screen, NFC for contactless payments, and 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM for multitasking. It's too bad that its T-Mobile exclusivity will severely limit its audience. On the bright side, if you picked up the phone while moving to Metro by T-Mobile, it's likely that the phone would be free through the carrier's signup offer. And while I am normally not thrilled with a phone that gets only two years of security updates, at this lower price it's easier to stomach as long as you know to move onto a new device after its security updates end. If you can live with the two-year lifespan, the TCL 50 XL 5G provides a lot of value. But if you hope to use the phone for three years or longer, you should check into what Motorola offers with its Moto G line or Samsung's Galaxy A phones, which will get more years of security updates.
