Sharp as a razor. Sony had manufacturing issues with their Tablet S. The brand new Tablet Z is supposed to help get the electronics company back on track - and ahead. We scrutinized this pre-series device. Even its appearance is certainly sharp...

Sony hasn't had a great track record in tablets because of their experiments at making unique tablets. By moving back to a more traditional design, the Xperia Tablet Z is a good 10-inch Android tablet with some unique features like water resistance, IR blaster and NFC. The problems it that it's pricing puts it on the high end without many of the attributes that make the premium tablets.

We couldn't wait to get our greasy mitts on the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, having been teased ever since it was unveiled. But we didn't go into it blindly - so often, we've waited for the next big thing, only to feel that sense of 'meh' almost immediately. We never felt that with the Sony Xperia Tablet Z. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a triumph, a tablet that genuinely deserves consideration when you're in the market for a new top-end gadget. If you're against the iPad for any reason, or even just agnostic over your OS, the Sony has taken the best of Android and fused it with its own innovation to make a device that delights in more ways than we can count.

Let’s first start with the bad part. Xperia Tablet Z shares a lot of common hardware with its older brother, Xperia Z smartphone. On the bad side that means quiet speakers (at least we got 3 more), and screen with smaller viewing angles. Unfortunately, list doesn’t stop there as all the software bugs Xperia Z introduced (and most of them cured after series of updates) are presented in Tablet variant several months later.

There’s very little to criticise the Xperia Tablet Z over. It’s thin, light, powerful, well-made, waterproof and it has a memory card slot. The battery life could be better but the cameras are both excellent by tablet standards, and the media playback apps and hardware are superb. In fact, I’d say the Tablet Z is the most convincing 10-inch tablet on the market at the moment and certainly the best that Sony has ever produced. If I was thinking about splashing out on a new smartphone and a new tablet, I’d spend the money on an Xperia SP and an Xperia Tablet Z, respectively. Never before would Sony have topped either my phone or tablet want-list, let alone both, so it’s clearly doing something right.

With a price tag of Rs 46,990, the Xperia Tablet Z is very pricey when you consider its overall performance. It has some neat tricks up its sleeve, like the IP55/57 certification and the IR blaster, but the comparatively low onboard storage, mediocre camera and battery life and the intermittent lag in the UI takes away from an otherwise pleasant experience. You can get a 32GB 4th Gen iPad with 3G for this money and that’s the route we’d recommend if you have this budget, as you’ll be getting a better display, camera and battery performance for a little less.

Xperia Tablet Z has taken the 'best Android tablet money can buy' title in India today. It offers a slew of features such as India-specific content, a good skin, slim and sexy form factor, and some brilliant power under the hood. On the downside, the device may be late in receiving Android updates and 16GB onboard storage isn't the best. Nonetheless if a powerful, weatherproof Android device is on your horizon with price not being a problem, you can consider this device. It is a worthy contender to the iPad, which will still be your primary weapon of choice if a robust apps ecosystem is what you want.

Sony has made a very desirable tablet in the Xperia Tablet Z. We particularly like its striking svelte design and features that you don't get with rivals such as NFC, its waterproof casing and infrared. However, its slightly lacking performance means the Nexus 10 will save you some money or the iPad 4 will give you a smooth experience for the same price.

Is all this enough to make up for the high price? The answer has to be no. We enjoyed using the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, but it’s 25% more expensive than the Nexus 10, and while it boasts a more elegant design and tougher construction, it fails to compete with that device’s screen, or its battery life. In short, the Tablet Z isn’t good enough to justify the extra cost.

Consumer tablets are really differentiating themselves now, and each of the leading ones have different strengths. The Transformer Pad Infinity has an optional keyboard dock that turns the tablet into a veritable laptop replacement. The Galaxy Note 10.1 has a pressure sensitive stylus and dual-screen multitasking. Microsoft's Surface RT has Microsoft Office, and no other tablet can touch Apple's iPad when it comes to offers a range of truly tablet-optimized apps, games and educational content. If you want the thinnest, lightest, and arguably fastest Android tablet on the market, the Tablet Z is the way to go, but you'll pay a premium and miss out on some unique features offered by the competition. Our Editors' Choice award remains with the Note 10.1, as its stylus and multitasking features make it more useful than any other tablet we've tested.

Sony gives you a lot for your $499: You get the thinnest and lightest tablet on the market -- and one that's water-resistant -- an innovative remote control, and all-day battery life. However, the sound could be better, and you can pick up the ASUS TF700 with a 1080p display for $379. The $499 Galaxy Tab 10.1 isn't nearly as sleek, but its pen input makes that device more versatile.

Sony's made its best tablet yet. It's a stylish relaunch of the company's Android tablet series, but we can't shake the feeling that the Xperia Tablet Z's benefits are harder to sell than, say, the crisp display resolution of the Nexus 10 or the app strength of the iPad. Features like NFC and the infrared blaster ensure it lives up to its promise as a TV companion, while the screen is capable enough to share among friends or prop up for an impromptu TV-watching session.

Sony had to go back to the drawing board after its Tablet S and Tablet P devices bombed. Sony has nailed it with the redesigned tablet. The performance and features are worth the iPad-equivalent pricing. However, we just can't help feel that the Tablet Z isn't going to be as widely adopted as it should be.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a great Android tablet. The design and specification is impressive, offering a thin and light tablet that's a pleasure to hold, with the reassurance of protection from water for those inevitable accidents. Some might take issue with the need to open flaps, although with the right accessories you'll be able to bypass that minor irritation.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a noble attempt by the Japanese firm to draw attention away from the more fashionable Samsung and Apple competition. The tablet's IP57 certification, lightweight and ultra-slim design, coupled with its entertainment and productivity services make it a compelling choice for any business user who is regularly required to travel for work. However, the Tablet Z's core offering is hampered by niggling issues such as poor software additions that can hinder performance and average battery life.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z features the most impressive design we have seen to date. its most significant benefit is the thin and light form factor, packaged in an elegant -but tough- body. The battery life is excellent and the performance is really good for such a super slim chassis; as a matter of fact, the entertainment experience is highly enjoyable. We have always known that “specs” and synthetic benchmarks don’t tell the whole story and the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is probably the embodiment of that principle. In absolute terms, it performs very well, but when you look at it from the prism of design, aesthetics and overall user experience, it performs brilliantly. The Xperia tablet Z is everything that tablets were meant to be: fast, thin, light, with a good battery life — and you get some water and dust resistance as a bonus. What’s not to like?

With the arrival of the incredibly priced Nexus 7 and 10, the game has changed for Android tablets, but Sony seems to have received the memo, scrunched it into a ball and eaten it, never to mention its existence again. If your heart is set on a Sony tablet to match your living room set-up or if the waterproofing angle is a big deal, then the Xperia Tablet Z won’t let you down with a lovely screen, good performance and life-saving battery life. But at that price next to the iPad and Nexi, for many the Tablet Z just can’t compete.

At first glance, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is probably the most inpressive non-Apple tablet we've seen. Up until now there haven't been many options aside from Samsung for Apple refuseniks who want to get in on the tablet action. We reckon Sony's new lightweight, waterproof tab could be the one to change that. Stay tuned for a full review...

Sony has just announced the Xperia Tablet Z, a 10.1in Android tablet that's thinner than the Apple iPad mini. There's no availability details just yet, but we can only hope it lands in Australia as soon as possible.

Qualcomm Adreno 320:
