There are some redeeming things about the Motorola Edge Plus. The screen is quite good and surely on par with those of competing phones. Battery life is a big winner. The Edge Plus easily outlasts many of the phones in its price range even if it doesn’t charge quite as rapidly as some of them. Motorola’s build of Android is cleaner than most, which means you get less Motorola and more Google in the user interface. You also get excellent audio performance whether you’re listening to the built-in speakers or via Bluetooth. Motorola could — nay, should — have done a better job with the Edge Plus (2022). It can’t charge $999 for a phone that clearly falls behind other devices at the same price point. Maybe the phone will be worth it to some buyers at the discounted $699 price, but even then it feels like a stretch when the excellent Pixel 6 Pro is available for $650 at the moment. While it’s not without its individual merits, if you’re looking for a true, well-rounded premium experience, you won’t find it in the Motorola Edge Plus (2022).

The Motorola Edge+ 2022 is a good phone, but that’s selling for a bad price. If you can find a discount and pick one up for around $800, you’ll be quite happy with the device, but if you’re truly looking to spend $1,000 on a smartphone, there are much better options you should consider.

Reviewing a phone means evaluating what's there, but sometimes what's not is too hard to overlook. And I'm trying really hard to justify how a phone that still costs $899 after a launch-period discount goes without a telephoto lens — a feature that other phones in this price range offer. The cheap-feeling design of the Motorola Edge Plus (2021) is another puzzler. These decisions stand out even more because of the features that Motorola gets right. The main camera on the Edge Plus produces some pretty good shots. The phone can match any top Android device when it comes to performance, and the bright and colorful 6.7-inch display is a pleasure to look at. Gamers, in particular, might find plenty to like about the Motorola Edge Plus, thanks to that 144Hz refresh rate (provided they don't mind keeping a phone charger close at hand). In the end, the Motorola Edge Plus (2022) finds itself in the in-between land for smartphones — not quite enough features to go up against the very best flagships, too big a price tag to be considered a midrange alternative.

Who is this phone for? It’s for people who want to give Motorola a shot. Maybe you’re tired of Galaxies, Notes, Vs, Gs, and Ps. The Motorola Edge Plus is a unique device that fares well, but it is showing age. My biggest complaint with the phone is the display, which may be just me. You may not have an issue with the curved light phenomenon. The other major issue is, of course, the Verizon exclusivity. That really holds the phone back. When it comes to everything else, Motorola did a fine job. Basics such as battery life, processing power, 5G, and overall quality are all spot on. The camera is surprisingly good for a Motorola phone, too. For those who want to try something fresh, the Motorola Edge Plus is a fine choice. At this point in its life cycle, however, you may be better off with a Galaxy S21 or OnePlus 9 Pro.

The Motorola Edge Plus is a fine phone. Not oh-my-stars-amazing, not terrible, but somewhere in between. The performance and software experience is about what you would expect for a $1,000 smartphone, and even though the cameras might fall behind the competition in some areas, you can still take some great photos with the Moto Edge Plus. That being said, I’m not sure I see any compelling reasons to buy this over a Galaxy S22, iPhone 13, or any other current flagship smartphone. There aren’t any groundbreaking software or hardware features on the Moto Edge Plus, and Motorola’s promise of only two major Android OS updates and three years of security patches falls behind the competition. Samsung now promises four major updates and five years of security patches, the Google Pixel 6 will have three years of OS updates and five years of security fixes, and Apple is still updating the six-year-old iPhone 6S.There’s also the problem of pricing. Even at the temporary initial cost of $900, you can get the entry-level Galaxy S22 for $100 less, or the Google Pixel 6 for $300 less.

This version of the Edge Plus proves that Motorola can make a good mainstream, no-funny-business, high-end Android phone. But “good” isn’t a sufficient selling point when you’re up against Google, Samsung, and Apple, which all offer devices around the same price with stronger cameras, build quality, and support policies. Most people won’t pay the Edge Plus’ $999 asking price and will either buy it at a discount from Motorola or have it financed through their carrier. If you do find it for a good price and you’re a fan of Motorola’s budget or midrange phones, then the Edge Plus is a fine choice. You get much more storage than the base model Pixel 6 Pro or S22 Plus, a very good screen, and a phone that’s enjoyable to use and just gets out of your way for the most part. We may not have many premium Android phones to choose from in the US, but the devices we do have are really good. It takes something special to warrant a recommendation when the S22 Plus and Pixel 6 Pro are on the table, and the Edge Plus doesn’t quite have it.

The Moto Edge+ offers several flagship features to shoppers for whom camera quality isn't paramount. The phone's big 1080p screen is easy on the eyes, it has enough battery life to get you through the day without worry, and it's plenty fast, both in terms of hardware and connectivity on Verizon's network. Our Editors' Choice winner remains the Samsung Galaxy S22+, though. It costs a bit more, but the Galaxy S22+ is fully waterproof, has a much better camera, and will get more future Android updates, making it a better buy in the long run.

Motorola made some questionable choices when it cobbled together the Edge Plus (2022). The company clearly wants to play in the same space as today’s market leaders — at least when it comes to what it charges for its flagship. The Edge Plus costs the same as many of the best phones in the market. That would be fine if the Edge Plus offered the same high-quality experience that many of those phones do. Sadly, it does not. Motorola cut some corners and it shows. It could have swapped out the polycarbonate framing for a more appealing aluminum chassis, but it didn’t. It could have engineered the phone in order to score an IP68 rating, but it didn’t. It could choose to better support its devices with ongoing OS and security updates, but it hasn’t. It could have lent more resources to its camera team for a more competitive photography suite, but it didn’t. There are some redeeming things about the Motorola Edge Plus. The screen is quite good and surely on par with those of competing phones. Battery life is a big winner.

The new Motorola Edge Plus is improved in many ways over the previous model. At $1,000, it will be overlooked for phones like the iPhone 13 Pro and Galaxy S22 Plus. But at $900 or $850, it's definitely worth considering, especially if you're comfortable with good but not great cameras and less than average water and dust resistance.

The Motorola Edge+ (2022) might be the closest Motorola has come to making a true flagship phone in a while, but its shortcomings and relatively high price cause it to fall hopelessly flat. Motorola has some good bones in the software — which is a much more feature-rich and customizable Android 12 than Google offers — but the company seems to have forgotten the rest of the basics required for this pricepoint.

To round out my review, I very much enjoyed my time with the Motorola Edge+. From watching content to playing games to scrolling through social media, I had a blast using this phone. It’s really fast and snappy, and the 144Hz refresh rate makes every movement and animation that much smoother. Do I think it’s worth the $999 price tag? For that price, there’s a lot of competition. The $999 Galaxy S22+ would be a good competitor as well as the $899 Pixel 6 Pro. All three of these phones offer great performance, great designs, the latest software, and a lot of features. The Motorola Edge+ will definitely beat the Galaxy S22 in terms of battery life, refresh rate, and RAM. However, the Galaxy S22 would win when it comes to the camera, display quality, and software support. The Edge+ beats the Pixel 6 Pro when it comes to price and power, but it loses with lower display resolution and, again, the camera. The main thing that drags the Motorola Edge+ behind the competition is the average camera quality. The pictures just aren’t up to what a $1,000 phone should really do.

No. You can, but only if you’re a serious fan of Motorola, or you want to stand out with a less common smartphone. If you’re not so much of a rebel, you’d probably be better off with a more mainstream option. The Motorola Edge+ (2022) is a very good phone that unfortunately does little to distinguish itself, and which suffers from a lack of water resistance and a mediocre camera.

Back in 2020, I was cautiously optimistic to see Motorola get back into the flagship phone game with the original Edge+, even if that phone ended up being merely fine. Motorola is the third biggest phone maker in the US, so you'd think it might have a decent shot at making a compelling alternative to Google, Apple and Samsung's high-end devices. But now, having checked out its latest high-end phone, I feel like this whole endeavor might have been a mistake. Aside from its screen and chipset, the 2022 Edge+ feels more like a mid-range handset than a truly premium phone. It's lacking the telephoto cam that other flagships (and the previous model) have, and Moto's low-light photo quality seems like it's gotten worse, not better. Same goes for some of the Edge+'s other specs like its side-mounted fingerprint reader, which is a step back from the in-screen sensor on its predecessor. Moto even killed the headphone jack, which was one of the 2020 Edge's defining features, and a real rarity among high-end phones.

I know that I just tried to answer this above, so obviously I don’t know if you should buy a Motorola Edge+. Here’s one way to look at the Edge+ — If this were a phone I was considering, it would probably be because I was sick of Samsung’s excessively bloated One UI skin (and I truly am), I don’t trust Google’s Pixel 6 Pro with all of the software bugs they are still trying to get rid of 6 months later, and OnePlus is trending in a direction I’m not a fan of. Then this would be on my list. And if that’s you, the Edge+ really is giving you great performance and battery life, a nice display, solid camera, and clean software that stays out of your way. There will always be worries about software updates and their timeliness, so keep that in mind that not all is well here. But yeah, like the Edge+ from 2020, I think this is indeed a phone to consider.

Qualcomm Adreno 730:
