Potremmo essere all’alba di una nuova era per i portatili, ma non averla ancora riconosciuta nella sua portata. I netbook infatti potrebbero anche estinguersi presto. Quelli che infatti solo pochi anni fa erano dei dispositivi rivoluzionari, che hanno cambiato l’idea stessa di notebook per le masse, hanno infatti innestato un processo evolutivo che potrebbe ora portare alla loro scomparsa. I netbook infatti erano in grado di unire costi contenuti a portabilità ed autonomia eccellenti, il tutto però unito a una piattaforma hardware appena sufficiente anche per i task più comuni. Ora, con l’emergere da un lato dei tablet, eredi di dimensioni e peso dei netbook, ma con un’interfaccia e un sistema operativo ad hoc per un uso intrattenitivo e saltuario, e dall’altro di questi portatili con diagonale da 15.6", che uniscono a dimensioni non troppo dissimili da quelle di un netbook una piattaforma hardware decisamente più prestante e un prezzo comunque assai contenuto, i netbook potrebbero aver definitivamente fatto il proprio tempo e diventare obsoleti in tempi brevi. Da questo punto di vista il nuovo MSI CR650 è paradigmatico. La nuova piattaforma AMD Brazos infatti ha permesso ad MSI di offrire un notebook con un’autonomia, dimensioni e peso, non troppo distanti da quelle di un netbook, ma con prestazioni decisamente lontane che, anche grazie alla presenza di un display da 15.6", permettono una flessibilità d’uso sconosciuta a un netbook e ancor di più a un tablet, il tutto a un prezzo assai interessante, attorno ai 500 € IVA inclusa, che posiziona quindi tale prodotto molto al di sotto dei classici portatili da 800/1000 €, ma praticamente a ridosso di tablet e netbook, con appunto però un vantaggio in termini di funzionalità e potenza di calcolo che abbiamo ben visto.

Outdated, underpowered processor aside, there is little to recommend the MSI CR650. It feels flimsy and the glossy finish is prone to picking up fingerprints, though we must admit that the lid does a very solid job of protecting the screen, with no marks showing no matter how hard you press. The audio quality, keyboard and touchpad are reasonable, but the other contenders simply have more to offer. The screen is a particular letdown, and considering that’s the component you’re going to spend most of your time staring at, we’d advise you to look elsewhere.

MSI has now launched the CR650, a 15.6 inch with an AMD E350 APU that has a built in HD 6310 graphics chip. According to MSI, "the CR650 has been designed for demanding users who wish to combine the latest technology and high performance in as elegant and affordable a solution as possible". For £100 more than the Acer 5253, this laptop delivers similar levels of performance but lower battery life.

We like the fact that MSI fit AMD's new Fusion APU into the 15-inch CR650. You wouldn't want to use this $499 notebook for heavy-duty multitasking or video editing, but for those who need a simple machine for tasks such as e-mail, checking Facebook, and watching videos on Hulu or YouTube, it will more than suffice. Consumers will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of its audio, too. Those looking for more processing muscle in a similar screen size should check out the Acer Aspire 5742 ($50 more), but if you want a better-sounding and longer-lasting laptop with pretty good graphics chops, the MSI CR650 is a strong value.
