EN→ITA great laptop under $600 is tough to make without some severe compromises. The IdeaPad Flex 5i gets very close to hitting that mark, with its well-built chassis, solid keyboard and touchpad, and good-enough performance. However, its battery life is very disappointing, particularly by modern standards. The real problem is the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED, which costs only $64 more, despite having a better OLED display and much longer battery life. Know that the IdeaPad Flex 5i isn’t a bad laptop for the money, but I have a hard time recommending it when the Zenbook 14 OLED is right there on offer.

EN→ITIf you’re beholden to the Windows ecosystem but want the best experience possible out of a $500 laptop, check out the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i 14. For the light multitasking performance it offers alongside a snappy keyboard, a decent display, a good webcam, and a host of connectivity ports, it’s an attractive deal. Its short battery life is the only thing I can see being a dealbreaker for some people. If it is for you, and you have more wiggle room in your budget, the Acer Swift Go 14 (2023) is the next best option. In addition to longer battery life, it's better for heavy multitasking. But for the cost and versatility — the IdeaPad Flex’s 2-in-1 form factor and the fact that Windows can run many more programs than ChromeOS — I’d steer any high school or college student toward the Flex instead of a Chromebook.

Whether it's for use in schools, an enterprise setting, or for users who want a locked down and highly optimized laptop, its modest suite of hardware (and agreeable $679 price point) go much further than they would otherwise. If you don't like the idea of using Windows S mode, there are other budget laptops that I'd suggest instead, like Acer's Aspire Go 15 for $299. If you like the idea of a streamlined and efficient laptop for an agreeable price, but want more integration with Google's suite of apps and services, you'd be better off with a Chromebook like Lenovo's Duet Gen 9.

EN→ITOverall, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i 14-inch is well-built, easily handled with a comfortable keyboard and a bright screen, and relatively capable for its price. You certainly wouldn’t use it as a PC gamer—but for general office work, it offers enough performance. The screen is a bit of a wild card, since we tested 400 nits, while Lenovo only promises 300, and the color coverage could use a boost. Still, if you’re a general student or at-home worker (who isn’t these days?), this could be a smart pick. If you want a better display for a couple hundred dollars more, check out the Lenovo Yoga 7i. If you yearn for faster performance as well as a better screen, consider the Acer Spin 5. But, for someone who just wants a modestly priced, versatile, and easily moved convertible for office tasks, internet browsing and webcam sessions, look to the Flex 5i retail version.
