Intel 2920XM

L'Intel Core i7-2920XM è il processore quad-core per portatili più veloce in questo inizio di 2011. Grazie al branding Extreme Edition, sulla CPU dovrebbe essere facile effettuare l'overclock (moltiplicatore sbloccato). Si basa sulla architettura Sandy Bridge ed offre l'Hyperthreading per gestire sino ad 8 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline). Rispetto i precedenti quad-cores Clarksdale, l'i7-2920XM ora è realizzato in 32nm, offre una scheda grafica integrata e funzioni AES. Rispetto alla 2820QM con clock inferiore, la 2920XM ha un TDP più elevato.

Sandy Bridge è il successore evolutivo della architettura Arrandale. I principali miglioramenti sono le nuove istruzioni 265Bit AVX, il Turbo Boost migliorato e l'integrazione della scheda grafica nel core CPU da 32nm. Inoltre, il controller di memoria integrato è stato migliorato ed ora supporta fino ad 8 GB di DDR3-1333.

Il Core i7-2920XM offre una scheda grafica integrata (Intel HD Graphics 3000) che si è mostrata nettamente più veloce rispetto alle vecchie Intel HD Graphics delle CPUs Arrandale ed al livello delle schede grafiche dedicate di fascia bassa come la GeForce 310M. La HD Graphics 3000 supporta anche il Turbo Boost ed ha un clock tra 650 MHz e 1300 MHz. Poiché la scheda grafica condivide la veloce level cache, il processore sarà leggermente più lento con la GPU attiva.

Grazie al Turbo Boost ed all'Hyperthreading, le prestazioni del Core i5-2920XM possono raggiungere i livelli dei veloci processori Core desktop i5-2500K. Rispetto alla precedente generazione, l'i7-2920XM è fino al 42% più veloce rispetto al vecchio processore Core i7-940XM. Pertanto, le prestazioni dovrebbero essere sufficienti anche per le operazioni più impegnative come l'editing video HD o i giochi 3D. L'elevato valore di TDP della 2920XM permette l'utilizzo del quad core solo nei portatili grandi e pesanti (di solito a partire dai 15"). Rispetto alla precedente generazione di quad-cores, tuttavia, è presente un miglioramento del TDP, grazie alla GPU integrata.
