Androidbook. With the Eee Tab TF101, Asus hopes reap the benefits of both notebooks and tablets. The concept of an Android tablet with an optional keyboard dock to transform it into a laptop has been around since at least the last Cebit trade fair. But now we take a closer look at one of these fully-functional transformers.

If you do any serious typing and you don’t want to get separated from your tablet keyboard ever, this is might be the right tablet for you. It is one of the better Android tablets we've seen, but it’s not perfect.

The sensible side of us appreciates the inclusion of the keyboard dock; the gadget fan looking for a lightweight but well-built alternative to the iPad wishes Asus had stuck to creating an attractive tablet with a more responsive onscreen keyboard.

All that for $299.99 is a pretty good deal, it’s just too bad we were spoiled by $99 HP TouchPads and all other deals pale in comparison!

It all comes down to what you are looking for in such a device. If you want the pure simplified tablet experience that Apple has offered from the beginning, the iPad still does it best and has a large catalog of apps that Android certainly can't yet match. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer looks to be about as good as Android-based tablets get right now. Those excited about the Eee Pad Transformer should know that its successor is rumored to be just a few months away from release.

From the moment I took the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer out of the box, it was apparent that the company had created something unique. Designing the tablet specifically for use with the dock has made a coherent experience. Most tablets have docks available, but none of them mate with their respective tablets as well.

The Asus Eee Pad Slider is an intriguing proposition. Its large slider-phone style take on the tablet combines some of the best elements of a tablet and a laptop in one, creating a machine that's more practical than a tablet for heavy typing yet is more portable and cheaper than most laptops - and with better battery life. However, there seem to be few situations where its sibbling, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, doesn't trump it. Moreover, it looks set to be a little pricey. As ever we'll reserve full judgement until it's actually available and we've spent a good deal of time with it.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 is currently the most compact tablet in its class, but Transformer TF101 boasts better connectivity. Asus’ docking station also comes with a battery that extends battery life to as much as 16, but both laptops will be good for 8+ hours of intensive work. Both tablets’ performance is pretty similar, seeing as how both use Nvidia’s Tegra 2 SoC, which has proven to be good in multitasking and Android 3.1. Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks sleeker, it is easier to hold in one hand, but you may find connectivity a bit lacking. On the other hand, Transformer boasts a more robust build, mini-HDMI and microSD card reader and while a bit heavier, the finishing touches are quality. Thanks to the docking station, Transformer will turn into a notebook, which is not the case with Galaxy Tab 10.1. Price difference is at about €40 in Transformer’s favor. You can find this Asus tablet at about €400, here, while Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still unavailable in the EU. However, Galaxy Tab 10.1 is available in the US, where it sells for $499. The keyboard dock for Transformer alone sells for €100 Euro in Euro zone and $120+ in USA but it makes perfect sense to get it as it makes this tablet stands out from the crowd. Asus transformer is definitely worth considering as it is a netbook and tablet at the same time, while Galaxy 10.1 is basically just a nicer tablet.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is undoubtedly the best hybrid we’ve yet seen, and doing it this way round – Android tablet with bonus keyboard – works far better than the Windows way. Purely as a tablet we prefer it to the Motorola Xoom as well: the screen is better, the price is lower (albeit for only 16GB of storage) and you have the option of the dock. It still doesn’t quite feel finished, and the software could do with an update or two, but it’s another step up the ladder towards the all-round quality of the iPad 2.

The 16GB model we reviewed costs £430, or £380 without the keyboard. The 32GB model costs about £50 more. It's a fine tablet either way, though we recommend keeping the keyboard if you'll be doing a lot of typing.

In such a crowded emerging tablet field, it's hard to recommend one Honeycomb tablet over another. If you are attracted to the keyboard dock accessory and sold on Honeycomb as your platform, the price is definitely right, as the Transformer is the cheapest tablet with Android 3.1 (or 3.0, for that matter) right now. If you're looking for more than a Wi-Fi-only model, the T-Mobile G-Slate (by LG) is a very small notch ahead of the Honeycomb competition because it's the first tablet to integrate 4G wireless—and it also has a goofy-but-fun 3D camcorder. But you'll notice these tablets all rate similarly, and that's because the primary element here is the operating system. If you want the best tablet you can buy, go with an iPad.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is the Wayne Rooney of tablets. It might be aesthetically challenged, and its video playback and keyboard performance inconsistent at present, but there's no denying its versatility or skill. Likely to prove just as divisive as football's most famous orc, this hybrid tablet-cum-netbook will surely be dismissed by some as a novel chimera and likewise appreciated by others for its raw power and standout screen.

Overall, the ASUS Transformer is an excellent tablet- emphasis on the word tablet. I say that because it is not ready to be used primarily as a laptop. Although ASUS has done a good job with the dock integration, I just couldn’t get myself using or typing on it for an extended period of time. Plus, there are still many websites that don’t necessarily behave well on tablets. So as long as you are not thinking about replacing your primary computer with the tablet, the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is the best Honeycomb tablet available today at a price that is had to match. Just consider the keyboard as a bonus.

Overall I am really excited about the Asus Transformer. My biggest complaint is about the docking port being the only way to charge the tablet. This is on par with other tablets, so it is not something I can fault Asus for. Everything else about the tablet is exceptional and I look forward to using it every day. The price is also an amazing part of this tablet. Asus is able to provide all the features, and performance for the rock bottom price of $399. That is $100 less than the iPad 2, and $200 less than the Motorola Xoom. This really is the cherry on top and makes the Transformer the clear winner of our Editors Choice award.

Judged on its merits as Honeycomb tablet, the Eee Pad Transformer is ultra-fast with an excellent screen, but factor in the keyboard and it really shines. Much of Honeycomb works perfectly well without a keyboard, but the Eee Transformer’s is a real boon if you’re typing longer documents, and the fact it adds to the battery life without totally reducing portability makes it an option well worth considering. In fact it’s a match for any Android offering to date despite its low price.

We loved the Eee Pad Transformer. We don't see it replacing your work PC or a serious notebook PC, but what it can do is give you an internet tablet that offers more than enough to keep you connected and entertained while you're away. If you work in the cloud a lot, you'll find the excellent browser a formidable ally. For entertainment and something to make notes on while at a trade show, meeting or traveling from office to office, it's a truly fantastic piece of kit that's as desirable as an iPad and easily more useful.

In spite of my minor complaints about its design, this tablet is worthy of consideration. Asus's aggressive pricing, coupled with its above-average display, make the Transformer a serious contender. Even if you factor in the extra cost of the docking station, the costs are offset by that module's expandability and functionality. The big question, as with all early-round Honeycomb tablets, relates to the unknowns of Android 3.x's evolution and its thus-far slow-to-grow app environment. If neither of those issues is a deterrent, the Transformer + Mobile Docking Station could be a winning combination of productivity tool and entertainment demon.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is what we've been waiting for - a tablet that can truly replace a netbook or ultra-portable laptop. With the keyboard disengaged, it's a slim, fairly light tablet with a great screen and touchscreen. With the dock in-tow, it's a typing demon whose battery will outlast almost any laptop or tablet you can find. Android 3.0 Honeycomb apps need to catch up for it to compete with the iPad but we fully expect this to happen soon, and Android has its own trump cards like Flash video in the interim. What really completes the picture for the Transformer, though, is its ultra competitive pricing - this is an absolute bargain compared to its rivals.

Whether Samsung’s slimline form-factors and custom software on the incoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 8.9 will outweigh the Eee Pad’s keyboard (and the extra runtime the battery in that allows), or whether the HTC Flyer’s active stylus will be preferable, remains to be seen. The Android tablet market is only set to become more competitive as 2011 progresses, but right now ASUS has come closest to the promise of an affordable, innovative slate using the Google OS.

Unfortunately, as this is only the development version of the software, we can’t tell you more for the time being. Trust us, we can’t wait for the final version of the system, which should rectify all problems and enable the user to fully enjoy this device. As far as ASUS’ engineering team is concerned, and the same goes for quality of the components used and ideas implemented, we can but say - superb!

NVIDIA GeForce ULP (Tegra 2):
