If you're on the iPad 3 or earlier, the iPad Air is a highly appealing buy, and a bit of a bargain, we'd say. But paying the same price all over again a year (or less) after shelling out for the iPad 4 may be less clear-cut, unless you're flush with cash. Do you find your arm aching after using your iPad 4? If you find this annoying, the iPad Air is the answer to your prayers. But for us - and, we'd guess, for most users - arm ache is only an occasional annoyance, and not really worth spending upwards of 400 quid all over again.

To sum up our review, we think Apple's iPad 4 with Retina display is a superb tablet that won't let you down, with a fast processor and superb build quality. The last nine months have seen apps and games grow ever more demanding, putting the iPad 4's A6X processor in a still stronger position, and this is clearly the most future-proofed of Apple's iPad offerings. iPad 3 owners, nevertheless, may not wish to upgrade unless they're attracted by 4G's potential for faster mobile web access - 4G will get better, but for now remains expensive and limited in its coverage. Strongly consider the ultra-portable iPad mini, which is slower and can't match the sparkling display but is cheaper and will do the job for most users.

It perhaps will come as little surprise that the iPad Air has won in a head-to-head review over its predecessor, the iPad 4, but is it worth the upgrade? We think so. While there's not that much in the way of new specs beyond the upgrade to Apple's 64-bit A7 chip and the firm's iOS 7 operating system, the iPad Air is so much more comfortable to use due to its slim profile and low weight.

Summing up the battle of the flagship tablets, the Apple iPad 4 manages to win out by triumphing in three out of the six categories over its rivals. Apple's tablet trumped the Surface Pro and Nexus 10 as our favourite for design and display, and proving the best out of the bunch for battery life. Despite winning half the categories, the Apple iPad 4 failed to win the major battles of performance and software, losing out to the Surface Pro due to its ability to run the full version of Windows 8. However, we felt Microsoft's tablet failed to deliver on too many occasions, such as in design and display to warrant a win over Apple's high-class device.

The fourth-gen iPad looks no different from the iPad 3 (and even iPad 2) with Apple sticking to the same rectangular shape with rounded corners and chamfered edges. There's no change in dimensions so it's 186 x 241 x 9.4mm and it weighs 652g (662g for the cellular model). Of course if you don't like the size of the iPad, there's always the iPad mini as a smaller option.

After the budget friendly price of the Google Nexus 7, it's no surprise that the Nexus 10 is cheaper than the iPad. The Nexus 10 starts at £319 for the 16GB model while the equivalent iPad costs £80 more at £399. The price gap is slightly bigger for the 32GB models – a gap of £90 with the Nexus 10 at £389 and the iPad at £479.

Current iPad 3 owners needn't bother upgrading unless you desperately want 4G connectivity. For everyone else, the iPad 4 is the quickest iPad yet and a solid choice for a tablet in which we can barely find fault.

The iPad 4 is definitely the best full-size iPad yet, but if you have a third-gen model, you may feel that six months is too soon to upgrade. Perhaps Apple thought the same, so it delivered a gentle rather than a killer upgrade, though the speed improvement over the last model is evident.

Despite very stiff competition from its new rivals, the Apple iPad retains its crown as top 10in tablet, boasting a compelling complete ecosystem offering, a decent - albeit not on a par with the Nexus 10's - screen, fast performance and excellent battery life. However, we should point out that for those looking for a full-on laptop replacement, the Surface RT is currently the only valid option, featuring support for Microsoft's email and a full version of Office 2013. The only downside of this is that people wanting to use the Surface in this way will have to buy its Touch Cover keyboard add-on, which adds an extra £80 to the device's cost.

We can’t say that the fourth-generation iPad is an entirely positive upgrade, then. It’s massively quick, and remains our A-List tablet due to its sumptuous screen, the general quality of its hardware and the fantastic selection of tablet-specific apps and games in the App Store. However, that reduced battery life does put a dent in its overall appeal.

It really is difficult to say one of these tablets is "the tablet you should buy" as the needs of each person are completely different. We can say - in very loose terms - that if you're looking to buy a tablet to be used alongside your laptop, then the iPad 4 is probably the more polished of the two. However if you want a tablet that you can put in your bag and use instead of your laptop, then you'd have more of a fighting chance with the Surface (and its Touch Cover) in your arsenal. On a side note it's worth mentioning again (in case you missed it) the iPad 4's app store wipes the floor with the Surface's, so if it's apps you're after, then we suggest you go for the iPad 4 all day long, however, if the Surface gets its apps in order then it has the potential to be huge and a real game changer.

With 4G connectivity the iPad 4 is the quickest iPad yet and a solid choice for a tablet in which we can barely find fault. We award four and a half stars.

The previous iPad received 4.5 stars; I dinged it for its A5 processor. At the time, I told iPad 2 owners to wait for the next model. And this is it. The fourth-generation Apple iPad is the only product I have ever personally rated five full stars because it represents the tablet state of the art.

It’s daft to say Apple’s fourth-generation iPad is its best yet - how could it not be? If you're sure you want an iPad, fanboy or not, it's the one to go for. Still, there’s no need at all to upgrade if you have an iPad 3, of course - wait for the 5, at least. I wouldn’t go from an iPad 2 if it wasn’t for the retina display, though the new model’s performance hike is welcome. Having to cope with a new connector is less so, but new buyers won’t be overly inconvenienced, though they may baulk at the price.

The latest challenger to Apple's iPad has arrived in the form of Google's Nexus 10, made by Samsung. Unlike the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 is a direct competitor with the iPad and deserves one of our comparison reviews. We haven't got our hands on the Nexus 10 so this review is based on the specifications.

The third-generation iPad arguably didn’t need refreshing; in fact, if Apple hadn’t opted to change to Lightning, it could realistically have held off changing its largest tablet until early 2013, as per its typical yearly refresh cycle. That makes for a reasonably straightforward upgrade decision if you’re a 3rd-gen iPad owner. Unless you’re desperate for Lightning – perhaps you’ve also got an iPhone 5, and want to use all the same accessories rather than buy the adapter dongle – then we’re yet to see apps that really demand the potent A6X chipset.

The sneaky iPad 4 takes our tablet top spot almost by default. There are no cosmetic changes to swoon over but this is a seriously slick, turbo-charged version of our favourite slate, and all for the same price as the outgoing iPad 3.

PowerVR SGX554MP4:
