It's always fun and intersting to evaluate Apple's most powerful laptops, but these machines aren't for everyone. While the MacBook Pro 16 is the most powerful, featre-rich laptop that Apple currently makes, most users should probably consider a more mainstream model. If you want the best bang for your buck, you should combine the bigger battery and display of the MacBook Pro 16 with the more affordable M2 Pro. That configuration will deliver all of the efficiency, design and usability benefits, and similar CPU performance, for a fraction of the price. If, however, your workflow will benefit from the much more powerful GPU in the M2 Max, the MacBook Pro 16 with M2 Max is a powerful option if you've got the budget.

Once you go Mac, you never go back! That’s never been more true since Apple silicon-powered Macs became available. They’re a game changer. Over the last 4 months I’ve been using the M2 Max powered 16-inch MacBook Pro as my main machine and this is my review.

If you invested heavily in the previous generation MacBook Pro with its M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, then there’s very little here to entice an upgrade – however, if you’ve been hankering for an upgrade to an ageing machine, or are looking at switching to MacOS, then the MacBook Pro 14-inch (2023) is a stunning machine. The various price rises (prices have stayed in the States, but risen in regions like the UK) are tough to take, especially when the costs for additional memory and storage are so high. This machine, as a result, is for a very specific type of customer – for once, the Pro moniker isn’t simply a marketing term like it is with the AirPods Pro or iPhone 14 Pro. For many, the MacBook Air M2 is more than enough laptop for a lot less money. You don’t need the MacBook Pro for basic 4K video editing or RAW photo editing, as the M2 chip is more than capable of completing those tasks. But, if you need that extra hit of GPU and CPU then that’s where this MacBook Pro comes in. It also offers a far better display, the option of larger sizes, more ports and faster charging. Once again, Apple has made one of the best laptops around.

The budget-conscious should consider the M2 MacBook Air instead, it has more than enough performance for most people. The display isn’t as nice but it counters by being a lot more portable and affordable. The MacBook Air is the Mac notebook for everyone. And as for owners of the older M1-based MacBook Pros, I see little need to upgrade unless you really need the improved connectivity (the old models couldn’t output to an 8K screen), work with really large files and need a system with 96GB of memory, or could really use the additional multi-core performance. So what then is a MacBook Pro? It is as the title of this review suggests, the computing equivalent of a Rolls Royce. With vast amounts of power, and beautifully built, it is way more notebook than most of its buyers would ever need. If you do not absolutely have to use a Windows machine and have deep enough wallets, this is the best pro-grade ultraportable notebook you can buy today.

I vividly remember when I entered a thrift store in New York years ago and grabbed the Titanium PowerBook G4 the moment I saw it on the shelf. It was my first tryst with a pro-grade Apple laptop way before I got a 15-inch MacBook Pro which works fine till date. I knew I wouldn’t be using the machine to the fullest, it’s like driving a Ferrari on Delhi roads at midnight just to have a feel of a sports car. Using the M2 Max-powered 16-inch MacBook Pro is like giving you unlimited access to a luxury sports car that promises a greater level of agility and finesse to the driving experience. Not everyone needs all of the power the 16-inch MacBook Pro comes with unless you know what to do with a notebook that is purposefully engineered to squeeze out every bit of performance.

The MacBook Pro 16-inch 2023 with the M2 Max chip is the most powerful Apple laptop yet. Tailor-made for creative pros, it might not be suited for everyday users — especially for such a steep asking price.

Oh, and I don’t imagine that any of you were considering this, but just in case you were — no, it does not make a ton of sense to upgrade to these M2 models from the M1 line. The M1 and M2 MacBook Pros were expensive and fast machines, and they should still have quite a bit of life in them. But if you are still on an Intel MacBook Pro and didn’t spring for the M1 series last time around, either the M2 Pro or Max MacBook Pro will provide a considerable jump up in performance, thermals, and battery life.

If you’re looking for the ultimate MacBook, you’ve found it in the MacBook Pro 16 M2 Max. At 16 inches, it’s big in all the right places. You’ve got that beautiful display, powerful six-speaker setup and a big comfy keyboard. And that’s before you get to M2 Max silicon, the new king of Apple chips. It laid waste to competing systems in all of our performance tests. Is the GPU ready to go head-to-head with discrete graphics chips? No. But the fact that it’s even in the conversation, is a win for Apple. And lest we forget, this laptop is our new longest lasting system falling short of 19 hours by only 4 minutes. The MacBook Pro 16 is also big in another place: price. MacBooks don’t come cheap, and when it comes to the MacBook Pro 16, this is especially true. The starting price for an M2 Max configuration is an eye-watering $3,099, which jumps to $5,299 when you add more memory and storage. If you’ve absolutely had your heart set on a MacBook Pro 16, I’d recommend one with an M2 Pro chip. It’s cheaper, and if you check out our MacBook Pro 14 review, it’s plenty capable of getting the job done whether it's work or play. But if you’re a content creator with massive demanding projects, the MacBook Pro 16 will be hard to beat.

That independence, mixed with power, is why the MacBook Pro shines. On the one hand, the improvements for 2023 are moderate: an uptick in performance, battery life, and connectivity. All the same, they're improving on what was already a comprehensive all-rounder. Though the 16-inch MacBook Pro is undoubtedly a beast, I can't get past just how good the 14-inch version is when you factor in portability. Yes, a MacBook Air M2 is less of a hit in your bag (and your wallet), but being able to do desktop-level tasks from a laptop that doesn't care if I inadvertently left the power supply at home feels borderline magical. Road warriors are going to love it, particularly given the footprint which lends itself to getting things done even when you've only got an airline table or a slice of a Starbucks bar to work at. You pay for that privilege, certainly. I couldn't fault anybody for sweeping in and grabbing an M1 Pro or M1 Max version from the last generation, and saving cash in the process, or if the desk-bound opted for the astonishingly good Mac mini with the M2 Pro chipset. For those who need the most potent flavor of macOS on the road, though, paying for the best Apple has to offer right now comes with even fewer compromises.

Drawing the line, the 2023 M2 MacBook Pros are pretty much the 2021 MacBook Pro designs with updated hardware that delivers 10-25% faster performance between loads, a slight increase in daily-use battery life, and a decrease in battery life in sustained loads. Throw in some updates in connectivity (faster WiFi, HDMI 2.1), and these pretty much sum things up. Sure, the design particularities that bothered me about the 2021 MacBook Pro 14 haven’t changed, such as the notch on the screen, the lack of touch ID or a USB-A port, or the fact that you can’t lean the display back flat to 180 degrees. But everything that I appreciated about this MacBook design hasn’t changed, such as the excellent build quality and inputs, the beautiful display, the solid daily-use performance, and the unmatched efficiency and battery life. Upgrading to one of these makes doesn’t make much sense if you’re already using an M1 Pro/Max model, unless you must have the faster specs for your workloads. However, if you’re coming from an older laptop, these M2 MacBook Pro 14-inch models are solid options to consider. In that case, though, I’d still keep an eye out for discounts on those earlier M1 Pro configurations while still available, especially if shopping at a lower budget.

The new MacBook Pro 14-inch isn't a dramatic departure from the last model, but the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips will be incredibly useful to creative professionals.

If I ran a Windows laptop company, I wouldn’t be too scared of the MacBook Pro 16 with M2 Max. What I’d be terrified of is the backlog of M1 Max and M1 Pro laptops that are about to go on big-time sale. If even one of those 16-inch models (okay, maybe not one with 16GB of RAM) is regularly available for less than $2,000, I can imagine that tempting even some of the most loyal Windows users. Even with performance aside, the MacBook Pro 16 is far ahead of most Windows laptops in areas like screen quality, audio, touchpad size, and build. And there are just so many compromises that today’s Windows workstations ask when it comes to battery life, efficiency, noise, and heat — and if you can get your hands on one of these 16-inch MacBooks, you just don’t have to worry about any of them anymore.

Apple’s latest-generation MacBook Pro is a pretty special machine. And it shows that if Apple’s chips continue their trajectory then the rest of the PC industry will struggle for some time to come. Debates about whether the Mac should have a touchscreen or whether the iPad Pro should run macOS are for another time because what is on offer here is truly remarkable. You just have to make sure that you’re not buying something you won’t use to its full capability. While the MacBook Air isn’t favoured by some, it is more than good enough to do what most traditional MacBook Pro users need. But enough of that negativity – if you’re looking for a productivity powerhouse to accompany you through the next few years, the 2023 MacBook Pro is certainly it. The ultimate do-anything machine.

Apple M2 Max 38-Core GPU:
